With more than one million customers annually, the family-owned Shady Maple Farm Market is a Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, institution. At its sister business next door, the Shady Maple Smorgasbord – a 200-foot-long buffet stocked with some of the finest cooking Lancaster County has to offer – it’s not just the hardworking staff of 800 that’s contributing to the company’s success. A natural gas substation just a stone’s throw away is supplying the market with clean, reliable energy that saves the business up to $150,000 to $200,000 per year.
Shady Maple’s Glenn Weaver discussed the facility’s conversion to natural gas and the savings they’re enjoying at the June 12, 2014, “Think About Energy” Briefing in Lancaster, Pa.
Weaver explained that prior to August 2012, Shady Maple burned annually approximately 280,000 gallons of propane. However, by tapping an existing interstate transmission pipeline (the Columbia Pipeline), Shady Maple was able to make the switch to natural gas.
Shady Maple installed a new natural gas substation, as well as a 1,200-foot, eight-inch high-density polyethylene pipeline to feed its facility.
